I did hear a nice piece about the new map on NPR this weekend and they mentioned that the last one included climate data from the 1970′s which they said was notoriously cold. So perhaps this isn’t entirely climate change and may reflect a more normal situation. At least I can hope that is so.

From what I can tell about the new USDA map, some of the zone shifts are less about climate change, and more about more efficient topographical mapping and data collection. Fortunately, Canada hasn’t invested in a new zone map, so I’m as zoned out or in as I ever was.

Yeah, I found out I’m actually in 9a now (most of Portland is 8b). It definitely won’t change what I plant…although it does worry me a little…especially after this past winter, which was so mild I have many plants that never really went dormant. Makes me worry a little about what the lack of vernalization means in the long-term.
